I'm so glad I decided to take the time to watch this video; I enjoyed his lecture and learned quite a bit :) I'm fascinated to learn that fasting actually increases one's metabolism :O Although I'm currently successful with my calorie counting I can see me experimenting with fasting :) in fact in some ways I do fast if you count the days when I have 300 +/- calories to counter a few high calorie days ;) in all seriousness this video has me contemplating having a fast day every week!

I've seen a few of Fung's videos. I think if I ever become prediabetic, I would try it- AFTER I cursed all the changes I've already made for not protecting me from it and then ate a jar of peanut butter, a package of chocolate chip cookie dough and a big hunk of Costco chocolate cake with frosting. Don't have time to watch this one now. Does he really say fasting increases metabolism? Or is it ketosis? No hurry to get an answer.

Hi oolala, Yes, Dr. Fung believes that insulin is the primary, or."ultimate" cause of obesity, while the immediate...or "proximate" cause is excess calorie intake. One of Dr. Fung's main points is that lower-carb eating will help lower insulin and that periods of fasting is an even better way to reduce insulin. He says that long periods of sustained high levels of insulin is what creates insulin resistance, and that sustained periods of low levels of insulin will reverse that process. Under BLOG CATEGORIES on the right hand side of DietHobby, click on "Fasting", and you will come up with a comprehensive overview... under "Helpful Fasting Information". I've spent a lot of time reading his Blogs, watching his Videos, listening to his Podcasts, and reading his new Book, and I admire him a great deal...However... he relies on the Scientific Research of other people... which is ..of course.. always a "pick and choose" method, and what I've noticed is that sometimes there are many "Gaps" between the actual study results and the interpretation he puts on a study when he uses them to prove his theories. I think his theory about fasting increasing metabolism is one of these big time gaps, and his theory that reducing insulin resistance will lower a formerly obese person's Set Point involves another large gap. No matter who the Doctor, Expert, etc. everyone has their own Pet Theories - Beliefs, and just because some of their Beliefs or Theories seem correct or Effective, doesn't mean that ALL of them are. .... Difficult area, Difficult subject. At this point I admire the work he has been doing with Type II Diabetic issues... but I'm not one, and I'm not certain that his Theories apply equally to people without that health issue.
